COMMUNITY-BASED MENTORING COORDINATOR
Temporary, Full-Time (6-12 months)
At Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Newfoundland (BBBSEN), we enable life-changing mentoring relationships to ignite the power and potential of young people. As a volunteer-driven organization, we help children and youth facing adversity by matching them with caring volunteers in quality one-to-one mentoring relationships. With training and professional support, Big Brothers Big Sisters mentors form strong developmental relationships with their mentees that express care, challenge growth, share power, and expand possibilities.
We have an exciting opportunity for a positive, creative person to join the team at Big Brothers Big Sisters in St. John’s. We’re seeking a Mentoring Coordinator who is especially skilled in supporting and nurturing mentoring relationships. In this role, you’ll focus on the heart of our work: ensuring that our matches between children and volunteer mentors are safe, meaningful, and fulfilling for everyone involved.

What you will be doing:
- Provide ongoing support to matches through regular check-ins with mentors, mentees, and families to ensure relationships remain strong, safe, and rewarding.
- Continually assess match relationships in accordance with National Standards and Agency Policy to ensure match safety, relationship development, positive youth development and volunteer satisfaction;
- Identify, address and resolve barriers to strengthen the match relationship and be able to coach mentors around barriers experienced by young people with complex needs.
- Monitor match progress and outcomes, addressing any concerns early and proactively.
- Document case notes and updates in a timely, professional manner in accordance with agency standards.
- Maintain accurate case files and database records to track match milestones and outcomes.
- Celebrate match successes, milestones, and closures in ways that honour the impact of each mentoring relationship.
- Participate in regular team meetings and agency initiatives, including fundraising and community engagement activities as needed.
- Support the planning and facilitating of match events;
- Utilize a trauma-informed, strengths-based approach in building connections;
What you will bring
- Post-Secondary diploma or degree in a human services field (mandatory requirement);
- Strong written and oral communication skills, with efficiency and attention to detail
- Good organizational and multi-tasking abilities, including the ability to meet deadlines with high quality of work
- Knowledge and experience in interviewing and assessments;
- Experience working with diverse communities and working with children and youth facing adversity (including poverty, neglect, child abuse, domestic violence, mental health and developmental trauma)
- Knowledge of trauma-informed practice;
- Proven relationship building skills;
- Commitment to empowering clients and volunteers through a Strengths-Based approach;
- Demonstrated ability to work from client-centered and anti-oppressive perspectives; Cultural awareness, and a commitment to program development that is inclusive, and meets the needs of the diverse populations we serve;
- Demonstrate creativity especially in the areas of problem-solving and programming;
- Knowledge of community resources;
- Demonstrated ability to show initiative and decision-making, and work both independently; and as part of a team;
- Adaptable and willing to work flexible hours to accommodate the needs of volunteers and families;
- Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check (through BBBS)

Work Environment
We are seeking an individual who has the ability to work autonomously and as part of a team interacting with employees, volunteers, community partners, external stakeholders and management with dignity, respect, and professionalism.
The work location is on site at the BBBSEN office with a regular work week from 8:30 – 4:30 Mon-Fri. The position will require occasional evening and weekend work to meet the needs of volunteers, families and special events.
Compensation
This is a temporary full-time position (6-12 months). BBBSEN offers a competitive compensation packages including a health, dental and vision program, vacation, summer hours, Christmas closure as well as other paid leaves to qualifying employees.
